Baguazhang is an internal martial art that expresses itself through circular movements which use a combination of techniques including yielding neutralizing, sticking, coiling and spinning. Legend states that it was taught in a manner which allowed martial artists to adapt the principles of ba gua to the arts they had already mastered. Thus, throughout history dozens of permutations of this internal art have spread and flourished each style a unique art unto itself by expressing its coiling energies and power in many different ways. With this workshop, Doctor Gary Torres continues the Dragon Heart Series, a program designed to teach students the entire Dragon Heart Baguazhang system in just nine weekends. Each weekend will begin with a review of training basics, allowing new students to begin the program at any time. No matter when you enter, nine weekends later your training is completed, including an intense “applications weekend,” where you’ll get to bring it all together. Join Doctor Torres this weekend as reviews the basics, the eight circle walking postures, the eight palm exercises, Review, Kun Pole Method, applications to the continuous Dragon Heart Form, Wooden Dummy work and applications. Whether you’re completely new at Baguazhang, or an old hand looking to begin studying a new system, don’t miss this opportunity to train with one of the top martial artists in the country, as he guides you into the very depths of the Dragon’s Heart.

Imagine being able to pick up nearly any household item and use it as a weapon for self-defense! This is the goal of traditional compulsory weapons training. The compulsory weapons consist of the double-edged “jian,” the single curved edged “saber,” the staff and the spear. Each of these weapons possesses characteristics particular to themselves (hence the 4 compulsary weapons) that can be found individually or in combination in dozens of like items, from the pen in your desk to the steak knife in your drawer or the keys in your pocket. In this eye-opening workshop, Dr. G. S. Torres, lineage holder of the legendary Kwok system of kung fu, will teach you the “principle based” training of the 4 compulsory weapons. You’ll be taught a small portion of each of the training forms, not pretty competition forms, but combat forms designed to teach you the weapons’ essence. Once learned, you’ll be shown how to translate the characteristics to other common objects found in your home and office. Discover why Dr. G. S. Torres’ legions of fans just keeps growing as you delve into this fascinating workshop that will teach you the ancient principles of traditional kungfu weapons training. Learn the essence of wood and steel as you work with the jian, saber, staff and spear. See the traditional weapons in an entirely new perspective. You’ll never look at your butter knives and chopsticks the same again.

June 2, 2007 - Mastering The Combat Umbrella: Weapon For Rain Or Shine. In this day and age when nail clippers can be pronounced a weapon at a moment’s notice, children are suspended from school for wearing a "six gun" bracelet charm, and the bad guys are better armed than the civilians, now more than ever martial artists must find clever and innovative ways to be prepared. Enter the combat umbrella form. A specialized form developed by the legendary Grandmaster Peter Kwok, the umbrella form borrows from cane form techniques, utilizing the unique attributes of today’s umbrellas, especially relevant for today’s traveler looking for something he or she can still get on an airplane. This form is easy to learn with useful fighting applications that can be used with umbrella or cane. Join SiGong Gary Torres in this informative workshop that will give you some handy techniques, come rain or shine. Please note that this form can be trained using either a cane or umbrella. Attendees are responsible for bringing their own cane or umbrella. Umbrellas should have curved handles. Fighting canes can be purchased in the vending area.

June 2, 2007 - The Combat Applications of Yang Style Taijiquan. The legendary tai chi master Yang Lu Chan is considered by many to be one of the greatest tai chi masters in the history of the art. The tai chi form he created is the most widely practiced style in the world today. Yet for most Yang style practitioners, the style is practiced only for health, with little awareness of the awesome power locked deep within the form. In this workshop, Grandmaster Gary Torres, head of the Peter Kwok system of traditional kungfu, will introduce you to the combat applications of the Yang Family form. You will learn to finally understand the meaning of the moves as the techniques beneath the postures of this classical style. Discover why his legion of fans keeps growing as you join Dr. Torres in this workshop that will have you looking at your form from an entirely new perspective.

June 1, 2007 - Taking The First Step Into The Nine Alleys of Combat. Taking The First Step Into The Nine Alleys of Combat – Every martial artist wonders about the day they may need to use the art they’ve been training in for a self-defense situation. Will their techniques work? Will their opponent throw something at them they didn’t anticipate? The fact is that in a real life situation the potential variables facing you are endless while the stakes couldn’t be higher. How do you prepare for a future confrontation with endless possibilities? By turning your thinking upside down and looking at combat from an entirely new perspective. In this workshop Dr. Gary Torres, head of the Peter Kwok lineage of kung fu, will introduce you to the basic concepts of the 9 alleys system of combat – a completely different way of looking at fighting. You’ll discover how to prepare for an opponent, not a set of techniques. You’ll also learn how this system can be applied to taiji (tai chi) applications, making your practice far more effective. Join Grandmaster Torres and take your first step into the nine alleys of kung fu combat. All styles are welcome.

Chinese medicine represents a body of knowledge that stretches back thousands of years. Based on the concept of balance in the body, together with the body’s relationship to the 5 elements, diagnosis of common ailments is often based on deficiencies or excesses in the body’s organs or environment. In this workshop Doctor Gary Torres, Licensed to do acupuncture and a Medical Doctor, will teach you about the 12 meridians, together with command points, alarm points, source points, tonification and sedation points, and associated points. You’ll learn how all these points are incorporated into Chinese 5-element theory and how you can apply them through acupressure points for both martial and healing applications. Please note that information in this workshop is for educational purposes only and should not be viewed as a replacement for advice from your doctor.

How do you prepare for a future confrontation with endless possibilities? By turning your thinking upside down and looking at combat from an entirely new perspective. Add to your arsenal the Nine Alleys Universal Fighting System. In this two-day workshop Dr. Gary Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, will show you an effective kungfu system that takes the guesswork out of combat - the system of the Nine Alleys. The Nine Alley System divides an opponent into nine sections, like a pie chart. Each of these sections is capable of delivering and receiving specific attacks. Once you’ve learned to view attacks by alley rather than technique, the next step is to learn how to counter attacks from each alley. By viewing combat from this new perspective, all the endless possibilities of a fight are transformed into just nine defensible avenues of combat. The Nine Alleys System will not only increase your combat efficiency, but your confidence as well, knowing that now you can train for nearly any contingency. The Nine Alleys program is system independent, capable of being used with nearly any martial art. Best of all, everyone from beginner to advanced will benefit from this program that is as much about the mind as it is about the body. Join Dr. Gary Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country, as he teaches you an easy to learn combat system that will change the way you look at fighting forever, no matter what art you call your own!

Millions of people across the country do their tai chi form unaware of the meaning of the movements. This has helped earned tai chi the label “gentle Chinese exercise,” a name which does great disservice to this once great martial art. Locked inside every tai chi form are applications, combat techniques designed to put the tai chi energies into context. Without this knowledge, tai chi form is little more than an empty book filled with blank pages. With this knowledge, it is your key to unlocking the formidable power within. In this two-day workshop (weekend “one” of a two weekend program - weekend “two” in spring of 2008), Dr. Gary Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, will teach you the tai chi applications of the Yang style form, one of the most widely practiced forms in the world. You will learn how to deliver your applications with peng jing, the expansive power which is the hallmark of tai chi chuan. Practicing with others, you will get the feel of how each application works, both as a stand-alone technique and as it applies to push hands -- the precursor to actual tai chi sparring. Most importantly, as nearly every tai chi form shares postures with the Yang style, nearly all tai chi players will benefit from the training in this workshop. Join Dr. Gary Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country as he presents you with the words to fill the empty pages, the techniques in your style, the key to your own tai chi power!
