Taijiquan combines Shaolin based kungfu with ancient Daoist energy practices to create an unparalleled martial arts system whose mastery is still considered the pinnacle of martial achievement. Roughly translated as Grand Ultimate Fist, its name speaks volumes about the regard with which it is held in a country that serves as home to some of the oldest and most powerful martial arts in the world. Yet taijiquan is also fast becoming a lost martial art, with most practitioners simply going through the motions of their taiji form(s) unaware of the power locked within. In this workshop intensive you will study with Doctor Gary Torres, one of the country's top internal combat artists and trainer of "full contact" world champions, as he reveals the secrets of the taiji combat principles. You will first learn the taiji principles of movement and then combine those movements with taiji applications. Later, you will be taught to look beyond the primary applications present in all forms, and to recognize the near endless permutations which spread out from the main application set, like a tree with countless branches. With this foundation established, qinna will then be added to your training, combining taiji combat with the grappling arts. As both a physician and a master of Shaolin, taiji, bagua and xingyi, Doctor Torres will show you a perspective of taijiquan few can offer as you learn to unleash the power within your form. The material in this workshop will work with any style or form of taiji. Non internal artists (hard stylists) will also find a wealth of training and information which will increase their combat skills exponentially! Introduction To Dragon Heart Bagua" Dragon Heart Ba Gua has been described as a "no nonsense" bagua style which, in the hands of a proficient martial artist, may be used to devastating effect, even while cultivating internal energy and spiritual awareness. In this workshop, Doctor Torres, one of the foremost authorities on this system in the U.S., will introduce you to some of the movements, principles and applications expressed by the form. Each gua will be examined for the principle it demonstrates, as well as for the connections they share with the other internal arts. The material taught in this workshop may be applied to any combat style. Bagua fans please note: Doctor Torres will be launching an "9-weekend" program through A.S.I.A. beginning this year, designed to teach the entire Dragon Heart system. Please visit the "Summer Weekend Workshop" section for more details.

"Push Hands Advanced Training" For many push hands practitioners, the extent of their practice and training consists of the 4 directions: ward off, roll back, press, push. But at the higher levels of push hands training exists rare and little practiced training sets which can make the difference between a good push hands player, and a champion. In this workshop Doctor Gary Torres will take you from beginning to advanced in an hour's time, covering the basics of push hands first to bring beginners up to speed, then going beyond the everyday training to teach the advanced practices of xiao lu (little pull) and da lu (big pull). Learn these practice sets and gain the edge over folks that have been pushing for decades. Take advantage of this opportunity to study this rare advanced training from a master who trains champions.

Introduction to Xingyi Two Person Combat Form (Xingyi Wu Xing Doi Da)" Beyond the five elements and 12 animals solo forms of xingyi, is the more advanced two man (doi da) combat form. In this workshop, Doctor Torres will instruct you in this rare xingyi san shou, showing you how to put 5 element theory to use in this two person application set. You will be taught to use the 5 elements to both attack and defend against an opponent. Both the sheng (creative) and kuo (destructive) cycles will be demonstrated and taught. An awesome workshop covering high level combat theory and material that can be incorporated into anyone's practice. To register visit: "http://www.americansocietyofinternalarts.org"

Baguazhang is an internal martial art that expresses itself through circular movements which use a combination of techniques including yielding neutralizing, sticking, coiling and spinning. Legend states that it was taught in a manner which allowed martial artists to adapt the principles of ba gua to the arts they had already mastered. Thus, throughout history dozens of permutations of this internal art have spread and flourished each style a unique art unto itself by expressing its coiling energies and power in many different ways. With this workshop, Doctor Gary Torres begins the Dragon Heart Series, a program designed to teach students the entire Dragon Heart Baguazhang system in just nine weekends. Each weekend will begin with a review of training basics, allowing new students to begin the program at any time. No matter when you enter, nine weekends later your training is completed, including an intense "applications weekend," where you'll get to bring it all together. Join Doctor Torres this weekend as he starts you on the basics, then goes on to teach you the eight circle walking postures, the eight palm exercises, the single palm change, the first pole movement and the first road of the series. June 3, 2005 - Peng Jing: The Heart of Taijiquan Power: The taiji masters of old spent countless hours in standing postures designed to develop internal power or "peng jing." Once developed, that power was then expressed through form practice and application, leading to the stories of their abilities that made them legend. Today, unfortunately, standing practice is often overlooked or misunderstood - assumed to be a waste of time by those who don't understand its purpose. In this workshop, Master Gary Torres, will share with you a core principle of taiji practice known by the great masters for centuries - the internal power of peng jing. Through demonstration, Master Torres will show you the importance of peng jing and the role it plays in internal martial arts. You will also have the opportunity to experience correct standing techniques yourself under Master Torres' expert guidance, so you can add this critical part of internal training to your own practice.

June 4, 2005 - Xingyiquan: The Power of the 5 Elements: Xingyiquan or xingyi, is the rarest, and possibly oldest, of the internal arts taught today, with documented references dating back to the 11th century. Though outwardly simple to learn, with only 5 basic movements at its core, it possesses subtleties that can take a lifetime to understand, and can be devastating in the hands of a true master. In this workshop, Master Gary Torres will teach you the 5 basic moves if xingyi, known as the five elements, and give you a small taste of its power by demonstrating some of its applications. This workshop will be 90 minutes well spent as you learn the core moves of a martial art you can take home with you and practice.

June 4, 2005 - Chinese Medicine: Ancient Remedies for Peak Performance: Chinese medicine represents a body of knowledge that stretches back thousands of years. Based on the concept of balance in the body, together with the body's relationship to the 5 elements, diagnosis of common ailments is often based on deficiencies or excesses in the body's organs or environment. In this workshop, Doctor Gary Torres, licensed acupuncturist and MD, will teach you about the 12 meridians, together with command points, alarm points, source points, tonification and sedation points, and associated points. You'll learn how all these points are incorporated into Chinese 5-element theory and how you can apply them through acupressure points for both martial and healing applications. Please note that information in this workshop is for educational and entertainment purposes only and should not be viewed as a replacement for advice from your doctor.

Study of the 8 Roads As one of the three primary internal arts, baguazhang has generated a growing fascination over the years. Favored by the imperial guard of China as a martial art designed to operate at all ranges with multiple opponents, practitioners are often described as tornados in combat. In this workshop, Master Gary Torres will teach you the fundamentals of Dragon Heart Baguazhang, a bagua style known for its multifaceted applications. Combining circle walking with an intimate knowledge of the xiantian bagua, Master Torres will teach you through demonstration and hands on examples, why baguazhang is often considered the most versatile of the internal arts. With this workshop, Doctor Gary Torres continues the Dragon Heart Series, a program designed to teach students the entire Dragon Heart Baguazhang system in just nine weekends. Imagine being able to pick up nearly any household item and use it as a weapon for self-defense! This is the goal of traditional compulsory weapons training. The compulsory weapons consist of the double-edged “jian,” the single curved edged “saber,” the staff and the spear. Each of these weapons possesses characteristics particular to themselves (hence the 4 compulsary weapons) that can be found individually or in combination in dozens of like items, from the pen in your desk to the steak knife in your drawer or the keys in your pocket. In this eye-opening workshop, Dr. G. S. Torres, lineage holder of the legendary Kwok system of kung fu, will teach you the “principle based” training of the 4 compulsory weapons. You’ll be taught a small portion of each of the training forms, not pretty competition forms, but combat forms designed to teach you the weapons’ essence. Once learned, you’ll be shown how to translate the characteristics to other common objects found in your home and office. Discover why Dr. G. S. Torres’ legions of fans just keeps growing as you delve into this fascinating workshop that will teach you the ancient principles of traditional kungfu weapons training. Learn the essence of wood and steel as you work with the jian, saber, staff and spear. See the traditional weapons in an entirely new perspective. You’ll never look at your butter knives and chopsticks the same again.

June 2, 2007 - Mastering The Combat Umbrella: Weapon For Rain Or Shine. In this day and age when nail clippers can be pronounced a weapon at a moment’s notice, children are suspended from school for wearing a "six gun" bracelet charm, and the bad guys are better armed than the civilians, now more than ever martial artists must find clever and innovative ways to be prepared. Enter the combat umbrella form. A specialized form developed by the legendary Grandmaster Peter Kwok, the umbrella form borrows from cane form techniques, utilizing the unique attributes of today’s umbrellas, especially relevant for today’s traveler looking for something he or she can still get on an airplane. This form is easy to learn with useful fighting applications that can be used with umbrella or cane. Join SiGong Gary Torres in this informative workshop that will give you some handy techniques, come rain or shine. Please note that this form can be trained using either a cane or umbrella. Attendees are responsible for bringing their own cane or umbrella. Umbrellas should have curved handles. Fighting canes can be purchased in the vending area.

June 2, 2007 - The Combat Applications of Yang Style Taijiquan. The legendary tai chi master Yang Lu Chan is considered by many to be one of the greatest tai chi masters in the history of the art. The tai chi form he created is the most widely practiced style in the world today. Yet for most Yang style practitioners, the style is practiced only for health, with little awareness of the awesome power locked deep within the form. In this workshop, Grandmaster Gary Torres, head of the Peter Kwok system of traditional kungfu, will introduce you to the combat applications of the Yang Family form. You will learn to finally understand the meaning of the moves as the techniques beneath the postures of this classical style. Discover why his legion of fans keeps growing as you join Dr. Torres in this workshop that will have you looking at your form from an entirely new perspective.

June 1, 2007 - Taking The First Step Into The Nine Alleys of Combat. Taking The First Step Into The Nine Alleys of Combat – Every martial artist wonders about the day they may need to use the art they’ve been training in for a self-defense situation. Will their techniques work? Will their opponent throw something at them they didn’t anticipate? The fact is that in a real life situation the potential variables facing you are endless while the stakes couldn’t be higher. How do you prepare for a future confrontation with endless possibilities? By turning your thinking upside down and looking at combat from an entirely new perspective. In this workshop Dr. Gary Torres, head of the Peter Kwok lineage of kung fu, will introduce you to the basic concepts of the 9 alleys system of combat – a completely different way of looking at fighting. You’ll discover how to prepare for an opponent, not a set of techniques. You’ll also learn how this system can be applied to taiji (tai chi) applications, making your practice far more effective. Join Grandmaster Torres and take your first step into the nine alleys of kung fu combat. All styles are welcome.

Chinese medicine represents a body of knowledge that stretches back thousands of years. Based on the concept of balance in the body, together with the body’s relationship to the 5 elements, diagnosis of common ailments is often based on deficiencies or excesses in the body’s organs or environment. In this workshop Doctor Gary Torres, Licensed to do acupuncture and a Medical Doctor, will teach you about the 12 meridians, together with command points, alarm points, source points, tonification and sedation points, and associated points. You’ll learn how all these points are incorporated into Chinese 5-element theory and how you can apply them through acupressure points for both martial and healing applications. Please note that information in this workshop is for educational purposes only and should not be viewed as a replacement for advice from your doctor.

How do you prepare for a future confrontation with endless possibilities? By turning your thinking upside down and looking at combat from an entirely new perspective. Add to your arsenal the Nine Alleys Universal Fighting System. In this two-day workshop Dr. Gary Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, will show you an effective kungfu system that takes the guesswork out of combat - the system of the Nine Alleys. The Nine Alley System divides an opponent into nine sections, like a pie chart. Each of these sections is capable of delivering and receiving specific attacks. Once you’ve learned to view attacks by alley rather than technique, the next step is to learn how to counter attacks from each alley. By viewing combat from this new perspective, all the endless possibilities of a fight are transformed into just nine defensible avenues of combat. The Nine Alleys System will not only increase your combat efficiency, but your confidence as well, knowing that now you can train for nearly any contingency. The Nine Alleys program is system independent, capable of being used with nearly any martial art. Best of all, everyone from beginner to advanced will benefit from this program that is as much about the mind as it is about the body. Join Dr. Gary Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country, as he teaches you an easy to learn combat system that will change the way you look at fighting forever, no matter what art you call your own!

Millions of people across the country do their tai chi form unaware of the meaning of the movements. This has helped earned tai chi the label “gentle Chinese exercise,” a name which does great disservice to this once great martial art. Locked inside every tai chi form are applications, combat techniques designed to put the tai chi energies into context. Without this knowledge, tai chi form is little more than an empty book filled with blank pages. With this knowledge, it is your key to unlocking the formidable power within. In this two-day workshop (weekend “one” of a two weekend program - weekend “two” in spring of 2008), Dr. Gary Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, will teach you the tai chi applications of the Yang style form, one of the most widely practiced forms in the world. You will learn how to deliver your applications with peng jing, the expansive power which is the hallmark of tai chi chuan. Practicing with others, you will get the feel of how each application works, both as a stand-alone technique and as it applies to push hands -- the precursor to actual tai chi sparring. Most importantly, as nearly every tai chi form shares postures with the Yang style, nearly all tai chi players will benefit from the training in this workshop. Join Dr. Gary Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country as he presents you with the words to fill the empty pages, the techniques in your style, the key to your own tai chi power!

June 6, 2008 - Xǐng Yì Wŭ Xǐng Dui Da (Hsing Yi Five Element Two Man Form) Beyond the five elements and 12 animals solo forms of xingyi, is the more advanced two-man (doi da) combat form. In this workshop, Doctor Torres will instruct you in this rare xingyi san shou, showing you how to put 5 element theory to use in this two-person application set. You will be taught how to use the 5 elements to both attack and defend against an opponent. Both the sheng (creative) and kuo (destructive) cycles will be demonstrated and taught. Join Dr. Torres for this awesome workshop covering high level combat theory and material that can be incorporated into anyone’s practice. All levels welcome.

June 7, 2008 - DISCOVERING THE QINNA COMBAT FORM: THE MASTER KEY TO THE ART OF JOINT LOCKING Qinna is a grappling art whose main characteristic is joint locking, using the weak points of the human body to take control of an opponent. So adaptable is qinna, it is often taught together with other martial arts as a perfect compliment to any school or style. Most of the time, qinna is taught in a piecemeal fashion, with students being shown locks for specific moves or applications. Yet, known to only a select few masters of the arts, is a form that embodies all the primary locks, a training tool that serves as the master key.
In this workshop, Dr. G. Torres will start you on your exploration by teaching you some of the basic principles of joint locking. You will learn about some of the most vulnerable spots on the body, how to use the proper angles for optimum effect, and how to initiate your locks quickly to take control of a situation before it starts. You will also be treated to the first few postures of the qinna combat form, a form that serves as an encyclopedia of Chinese joint locking, counter locks and defenses. Join Dr. Torres in this “not-to-be-missed” treasure trove of joint locking secrets and experience the combat form your teachers never told you about! All levels welcome.

June 8, 2008 - OPTIMIZING THE YANG 24 FORM WITH QIGONG & ACUPRESSURE: SUPERCHARGING YOUR TAI CHI FOR HEALTH! The Yang 24 Movement Short Form (Jiǎn Huà Tài Jí Quán) will be broken down to reveal how it is done as a Qi Gong form. The different types of Qi (Yuan Qi, Gu Qi, Kong Qi, Zong Qi, Zheng Qi, Ying Qi, Wei Qi, Zang Fu Zhi Qi, and Jing Luo Zhi Qi) will be explained and how they pertain to movements in this form. Join Dr. Torres as he explains how tai chi and qi gong interlope the circulation of qi for health and longevity.
As the most commonly practiced tai chi form on the planet, the Yang 24 form has been improving health and vitality for millions. But what if you could amp up the health benefits of your form, supercharging your practice by adding some specialized qigong and acupressure work?
In this workshop, Dr. Gary Torres, medical doctor, chiropractor, acupuncturist and grandmaster of several different Chinese martial arts, will show you how to vastly improve the healing benefits of your tai chi practice. You will not only learn proper structure for your tai chi, but also how to amplify your practice by incorporating specialized breathing techniques, stroking specific points along your meridians, and manipulating your internal energy for optimal benefit.
Join Dr. G. Torres as he shows you how to combine tai chi form practice with a little traditional Chinese medicine, a bit of chiropractic protocol, and a touch of Western medical knowledge, to take your tai chi to the next level. Note: While Dr. Torres will use the Yang 24 form as an example, the techniques he will teach in this workshop can be applied to any martial or healing system to amp up the health benefits exponentially. All levels welcome.

Chin - (locking) the movement of joints against their normal range of motion. Na - (seizing) of the vital pints disrupting or blocking the energy flow. Chin Na Principles:1. based on joint structure,2. blood vessel network,3. acupuncture meridians (chi meridians). Applied Chin Na utilizes:1. strikes to and seizing of vital points, 2. tendon grabbing,3. blood vessel grabbing,4. joint locks. Chin Na has 4 main branches or components:1. kicking,2. striking, 3. throwing,4. locking Bones:1. axial skeleton (head, vertebrae, ribs, pelvis) 2. appendicular skeleton (arms, forearms, wrist, hand, fingers, leg, lower leg, ankle, foot. Joints can withstand the pressure of compression, flexion, extension much better than forces of rotation, therefore Chin Na techniques twist the joints to cause greater pain and injury. Joint types:1. Immovable = fibrous and cartilaginous, 2. Movable = have joint space filled with synovial fluid, cartilaginous ends and are freely movable but held in place by ligaments. Chin Na injure ligaments. Types of movable joints: Ball and socket (shoulder), hinge (elbow), saddle (thumb), ellipsoid and gliding (wrist), and pivotal (neck). Movable joints are traversed by blood vessels and nerves, and if twisted in the right fashion will interrupt the integrity of these structures causing additional pain and injury. Coupling motion = refers to the locking of a joint making that limb a lever for the next joint.Reactive motion = refers to the resultant motion or action caused in response to the locking of a joint. Golden Silk Entwines the Wrist - in an anchored wrist grab the fingers are force over the wrist and down. This is countered by upward piercing of the divine lock. http://internalgardens.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=288

Qinna is a term describing techniques used in the Chinese martial arts that control or lock an opponent's joints or muscles/tendons so he cannot move, thus neutralizing his fighting ability. These techniques can be very effective against larger and stronger opponents and are often taught in women's self-defense courses. In addition, the pressure of many techniques can be adjusted so that they can be used merely to control an opponent or to injure or disable them when necessary. Beyond this, the techniques can be used to defend against grabs, holds and chokes or used to immobilize, subdue, or control assailants. These are important skills for when you are in close contact with an opponent, and are especially useful in law enforcement and other situations when you need to subdue an assailant without injuring them. In most cases, qinna has been taught in a piecemeal fashion, tailored to a specific system or style of kungfu. Instead, this workshop takes a more comprehensive approach. In this two-day workshop, the second in a two weekend series, Dr. G. Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, will teach you the rare and powerful qinna combat form, an encyclopedia of joint locks, counter locks, holds and grabs. This two person sparring form is designed to train the entire gambit of locks and counters, stripped to their essence, and ready to be applied to any martial technique or self defense situation. Forget books and DVDs - this is the form that embodies the art of Chinese joint locking. Join Dr. G. Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country, as he teaches you the qinna two person combat form, the master key to the art of joint locking! http://internalgardens.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=288

Xingyiquan is often considered one of the most aggressively powerful of the internal arts. Though deceptively simply from outward appearances, the art has a depth and complexity that can offer a lifetime of study. Part of its complexity comes from its Daoist heart – Chinese five element theory. In this workshop Dr. Gary Torres, grandmaster of the Peter Kwok system of classical kungfu, will teach the flip side of the xingyi five elements showing you the healing side of the art. You will be taught the basics of five element theory. You will discover how each element corresponds with vital organs of the human body. You will then be taught how to heal yourself and others with this knowledge, using the power of your mind and the healing energy of your qi. Join Dr. Gary Torres for this fascinating workshop that will add yet another tool to your arsenal of healing. http://americansocietyofinternalarts.org/Events/events.html

Shaolinquan is often referred to as “the grandfather of kungfu,” and considered in many respects, to be the external heart of the internal arts. From shaolin comes powerful exercises, forms and techniques designed to create a firm foundation in the human body for the more complex demands of the internal styles. In this workshop Dr. Gary Torres, grandmaster of the Kwok system of classical kungfu will teach you the traditional 13 warm up exercises of the Shaolin temple. Beyond the simple choreography, you will discover how each movement holds multiple purposes. You will see how each move is designed to increase flexibility and strength, develop your qi, and teach you a vital technique and application from the shaolin system, all within a single movement. Join Dr. Gary Torres as he shares with a series of simple yet powerful exercises which you can be training with for years to come! IV.http://americansocietyofinternalarts.org/Events/events.html

Discovering the Devastating Power of Xingyiquan Xingyiquan, translated roughly as “mind intention boxing,” is arguably the oldest of the three internal arts and one known for its devasting power. At its core are five simple movements, cooresponding with the Chinese five elements of phases. Beneath this outwarding simply art, however, are lies a well of endless depth. From foot work designed to drive the power of the earth itself into an opponent, to a formula of creation and destuction based on Daoist theory which, potentially, may allow the user to counter an opponent with ease, xingyiquan is an art which can offer a lifetime of study to the willing student. With this two-day workshop Dr. Gary Torres, head of the legendary Kwok kungfu lineage, begins his long awaited series in Shanxi xingyiquan, the oldest of the xingyiquan styles. You will train in footwork particular to xingyi, designed to tap the power of the earth for devastating strikes. You will learn each of the five elements or phases. As always, you will also discover why Dr. Torres is often considered a walking encyclopedia of applications as he teaches you how to use each of the five basic moves to devasting effect. Three more workshops (schedule TBA), are in store, teaching you the entire system including the two person sparing form, creation and destruction cycle, and the 12 animals (additional postures with applications). Join Dr. Gary Torres, one of the top internal Chinese martial art grandmasters in the country, as he teaches you one of the interal arts most powerful systems as only he can!
